Things to Do

Around 4,000 cultural events every year, tradition and living customs, multi-faceted gastronomy, first class restaurants, numerous opportunities to shop and sight see – this is how you know and love the Mozart city.

But Salzburg is also more than this. Modern architecture, unusual art works, contemporary design, modern festivals and events, a 600 year old beer culture and trendy addresses make an exciting contrast to the nostalgic flair of the baroque town.

Salzburg Cathedral

Salzburg Cathedral is located in the old town. The Salzburg Cathedral or “The Dom” as it is called, is one of Salzburg’s most important sacred buildings. This imposing tribute to the early Baroque anchors the city and is filled with treasures. Don’t miss French artist Christian Boltanski’s “Vanitas” installation tucked away in a small room in the choir crypt.

Salzach River

For countless centuries, Salzburg’s main artery has forged its way through the heart of the historical district. The colourful array of opportunities along its banks never fail to lure locals and visitors alike – whether simply for a leisurely stroll, a fascinating river cruise, or mouthwatering culinary experiences.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Hohensalzburg Fortress is enthroned on the Festungsberg, high above the rooftops of the Baroque historical district. The biggest fully preserved castle in Central Europe, this emblem of Salzburg offers a 360-degree view of the city and its surroundings.

Getreidegasse

Wind your way along the cobbled street to the Getreidegaße, Salzburg’s famous shopping street. If you are ready for an afternoon aperitif, stop in at Sporer Likör und Punschmanufaktur. Housed in the narrowest house on the Geteridegaße, Sporer has been distilling fine Schnapps and liqueurs for over a hundred years. If you are a cheese lover, you will want to stop in at the Kaselöchl at Hagenauerplatz 2 on your way to the river. A tiny mouse-sized cheese shop, the Kaselöchl is stuffed with alpine varieties from the creamiest to the stinkiest.

Orignal Bosna Stand

Tucked away in a small passage between the Getreidegaße and Universitätsplatz, you will find the Balkan Grill. In 1949 Bulgarian Zanko Todoroff used a “secret recipe” to prepare the first Bosna in the Müller Bräustübl.

Mozart's Birthplace

W. A. Mozart was born in 1756 in the "Hagenauer Haus" at No. 9 Getreidegasse in Salzburg. Today, Mozart's Birthplace is one of the most visited museums in Austria and is an absolute highlight, above all for Mozart fans.

Cafe Tomaselli

A treasured tradition in Salzburg is an afternoon cup of coffee and slice of cake, an experience every visitor to Salzburg must have. A short walk from Mozart’s Birth House you will find Cafe Tomaselli on the Alter Markt. The Tomaselli family has run this Salzburg icon for 150 years.

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 by prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich for his beloved Salome Alt. The Mirabell Gardens were completely redesigned under archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun in 1690. The underlying geometrical form, which is typical for the Baroque period, is still clearly recognisable.

Augustiner Brewery

The Augustiner Brewery, in Salzburg's Muelln neighbourhood, boasts a chestnut tree lined beer garden. Since 1621 crowds have gathered to drink beer drawn from wooden barrels and served in stone steins.
